Well, hay there! Its been a while since I updated this blog. And do you know why? Its because N and I have donned our flannos, popped on some wide-brimmed hats, gone country, and are pretending to be farmers. You can read all about that here, and until we get the chooks rounded up and the cows to come home I won't be round on this blog so much!

Because I'm a really lazy person and I don't have anything better to do than set myself ridiculous deadlines that I can't achieve, I've decided to join in with Anthony Woodward's Mini Comics Challenge and make a comic about Freja, the babing Nordic goddess of love. I've been obsessed with Freja for a little while now - pretty much since I found out that she has a Battle Pig and a magic cape made of feathers. Should I be praying to her for strength? Twelve pages of comics in twelve weeks - sounds like a piece of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting on top... or not. Well - its a challenge at any rate, so I'm counting on the fact that we're allowed to fail.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482868754563726067.post-20583201725660623622013-06-12T03:39:00.001-07:002013-06-12T03:46:22.540-07:00Days of the week

As someone who finds the indigenous gods of Western Europe rather charming how delighted I was to find out that the days of the week in English take their names directly from a pagan pantheon of deities. Did you know that? There's the pretty obvious Moon, Sun and Saturn's day, but did you know that Friday (Freja's Day) is named after the Norse goddess of passionate love and fertility? Or that Thursday (Thor's Day) is named after that great hammer-wielding brute immortalised by Marvel in an appalling comic strip of the same name? There's also the more obscure Tuesday (Tiw's Day) - one-armed Norse god of law and glory - and who could forget Wednesday (Odin's Day) named after the heroic master of Valhalla.

I don't like to crow about it but I'm pretty, pretty excited to say that I have made a new zine!! Its about a brave young hen called Henric and is slightly based on the true story of my hen who decided, recently, that she wanted to be a rooster. Hopefully I will make it to Sticky in time today to give it to them for sale. In which case it will be there, and you will be able to buy it cheep, cheep, cheep.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482868754563726067.post-42237525319166157262013-05-03T17:06:00.001-07:002013-05-04T17:25:14.542-07:00Freedom

I love the words "free" and "comic books" but as anyone with two eyes in their head will tell you there is so much in comic-books-world that is distastefully flavoured by everyone's least favourite method of oppression: patriarchy. So in the spirit of freedom this Free Comic Book Day I am revisiting this awesome speech by Karen Healey and this project by US artist Alexandria Law.

Yesterday morning N and I arrived back in Melbourne and what was waiting on the doorstep? A beautiful box of Mandy Sayer's new book Coco in which I drew all the pictures. The book is an absolute riot and it looks so pretty (and shiny) in the flesh. And it might just convince you to buy a chihuahua, which is always a good thing (I'm still having trouble convincing N, who has his heart set on a border collie. Sigh.)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482868754563726067.post-45604168733492996722012-09-16T16:23:00.002-07:002012-10-26T16:34:28.366-07:00history lessons

Being a pathetic lady-fan of period dramas I was so tremendously excited to hear about Sam Wallman's Australian History Comics Anthology. Being a Bellarine Peninsula native, I thought I'd have a go at smashing out a part of the William Buckley story, with requisite silly-BBC-period-drama-style ship captain dialogue and a speedy montage to end this rather complicated and lengthy story! Submissions are due at the end of September.
So! I finally finished my zines for Sticky's Feed The Animals Fundraiser at TINA - my hands are sore from cutting, my fingers are covered in glue and I've just paid an exorbitant amount to post them to Australia from across the ditch. I ended up doing a little illustrated zine that takes many a cue from a this beautiful exhibition of Graham Percy's work that N and I saw a coupla days back in town.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482868754563726067.post-41210246221262042562012-06-24T22:16:00.001-07:002012-06-24T22:20:40.696-07:00into thee wild...

For the past three weeks N and I have been living in a little caravan, at the edge of a frosty wilderness in the "far out" far-north of NZ. This strange place we've been staying in gets stranger at night: when the morpork's start their hooting, and the wind goes icy cold, and everything must be done by candle light. To make things stranger, amongst the rumpty forest in which we live, there are a number of other caravans - each in a differing state of disrepair, dotted amongst the long grass and the straggly trees. In the daylight, they're unoccupied, but at night time my imagination fills them with all sorts of creepy fly-by-night characters, or the ghosts of those who've inhabited them before. And its then that I thank my lucky stars I've sensible N beside me, with his sensible torch, to aid in any moments of irrational terror!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482868754563726067.post-15129354124328740232012-06-02T05:42:00.002-07:002012-06-02T05:47:40.826-07:00fare thee well...

If there's one lady I'm in awe of at the moment its Miranda and her Observertree. Miranda has just clocked up 150 days (that's 5 months!!) living on a platform, high above the treetops, in Tassie's threatened forests. And last week it started snowing. Some time last week I was talking to a friend about the time I taught kids to play the ukulele for a job. I was saying how the grade preps were so crazy - they barely even knew how to be at school, let alone learning an instrument. My friend was like "yeah, no one has given them the backstory"... which made me think, right, when do we ever get the backstory? The step-by-step instructions? The trouble-shooting manual? It so happened I was reading the wonderful Matte Resist's 'How & Why' at the time, so's I was in the mood for a bit of resistive thinking about unschooling and the like. At any rate, I figure, not having the instructions gives you a pretty good excuse for later, when you're not in prep, and you muff things up.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6482868754563726067.post-35377407427013706732012-02-14T01:58:00.000-08:002012-02-14T02:06:25.124-08:00library tourWhat are you doing on Saturday? This is what I will be doing.
